Uttarakhand Government permits pilgrims following negative COVID test report

  • In the midst of increasing COVID cases, the government of Uttarakhand had made plans to permit the pilgrims for Mahakumbh only after they provide a negative COVID-19 test report.

NGT criticizes Environment Ministry over unused relief funds

  • The NGT (National Green Tribunal) has criticized MoEF (Ministry of Environment and Forests) over the unused Rs 800 crore which was allotted to Environment Relief Funds for people who has suffered accidents due to handling hazardous substances.
  • Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, NGT Chairperson and Justice S K Singh has stated that the United India Insurance Company Ltd which has been provided by the Public Liabilities Insurance Act to be the manager of the funds for the term of five years has not yet informed whether the amount of Rs 881 crore deposited has been utilised or not.

Rangoli Chandel, sister of Kangana Ranaut given interim protection by High Court

  • On Wednesday, Bombay High Court in its judgement has granted interim relief to Rangoli Chandel and Kangana Ranaut with condition that both of them would appear before Mumbai Police to record statements on January 8.

  • The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has declared Karvy Stock Broking as a defaulter for non-compliance with the regulatory provisions of the bourse.
  • Karvy Stock Broking has been expelled from the membership of the exchange, the NSE said in a circular.
  • The move effective from November 23, was taken as the broker failed to comply with NSE guidelines, it added.

India now working on 1,500-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

  • The Army Tuesday carried out a ‘live missile test’ of the 290-plus km range BrahMos missile, but efforts are on to extend its range to 400, 800 and 1,500 km.
  • BrahMos, the only supersonic cruise missile in the world that flies at three times the speed of sound (2.8 Mach), currently has a range of 290 km, but efforts are also on to extend this to 400 km.
  • The Army carried out the first of several ‘live missile tests’ of the 290-km range BrahMos in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The Navy and the Air Force — which has fitted its Sukhoi Su-30 MKI fighters fitted with the BrahMos — are also likely to carry out tests this week.

Russia caught U.S. warship in its waters, chased it off – defense ministry

  • A Russian warship caught the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain operating illegally in Russia’s territorial waters in the Sea of Japan, but chased it off, Russia’s defense ministry said on Tuesday.
  • Moscow said that the Admiral Vinogradov, a Russian destroyer, had verbally warned the U.S. ship and threatened to ram it in order to force it to leave the area.
  • The U.S ship had immediately returned to neutral waters after being warned off, the defense ministry said in a statement.
  • Such incidents are rare but underscore poor diplomatic and military relations between Russia and the United States whose ties are languishing at a post-Cold War low.

Taiwan to protect sovereignty with new submarines amid China tensions

  • Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Tuesday pledged to uphold the sovereignty of the Democratic Island with the construction of a new fleet of developed submarines in the country, a key project backed by the United States to counter neighbouring China .
  • Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has been working for years to revamp its submarine force, some of which dates back to World War II, and is no match for the Chinese fleet, which includes ships capable of launch nuclear weapons.
  • At a ceremony to mark the start of construction of a new submarine fleet in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, Tsai called the move a “historic milestone” for Taiwan’s defensive capabilities after overcoming “various challenges and doubts ”.

Yemen’s Houthis say they fired missile at Saudi Aramco site in Jeddah

  • There was no immediate Saudi confirmation of the claim made by the group’s military spokesman, who warned foreign companies and residents in Saudi to exercise caution as “operations will continue”.
  • Aramco’s oil production and export facilities are mostly in Saudi’s Eastern Province, more than 1,000 km across the country from Jeddah.
  • State oil giant Aramco did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
  • A Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, said the attack was carried out with a Quds-2 type winged missile.
