Assault of judge is assault of judiciary, plea in Supreme Court demands judicial inquiry into attack on Bihar by police

  • Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel passed away this morning due to multiple organ failure after having tested positive for novel coronavirus last month.
  • Ahmed Patel was one of the tallest leaders of the Congress party and an 8 time parliamentarian from Gujarat.
  • A bench headed by justice a m Khanwilkar directed advocate Vishal Tiwari, appearing on behalf of the petitioner to add the concerned police officer as a party and then approach the court.

SC dismisses Skoda Volkswagen‘s plea to quash FIR for alleged use of cheat device in car

  • The SC dismissed a plea by German car maker Skoda Auto Volkswagen challenging an FIR registered in UP by a customer over the alleged use of “cheat device” in its diesel car.
  • CJI S.A. Bobde and A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian pronounced the verdict and dismissed the plea by the automobile maker.

Handling pendency: Appointing additional judges looks easy from outside, but no so, comments SC

  • On an appeal to appoint more judges, to handle the huge pendency of cases, the SC commented: “It may appear easy from outside but it’s not so”.
  • The petition field by Lol Prahori, came before bench of CJL, S.A. Bobde and A. S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian. It sought appointment of additional judges in order to avoid pendency of cases in the top court.

  • With the level of air pollution in UP reaching dangerous level in many cities, the issue has reached the HC.

Four more teenagers have been charged for the beheading of Samuel Paty’s:

  • Four teenage students have been charged in France over the killing of  Samuel Paty.
  • Also three other pupils were charged with complicity earlier this month over the beheading of Paty on Oct 16, who had shown his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad as part of a lesson on free speech.
  • Three of the four students charged on Thursday were suspected of identifying Paty to his killer, 18-year-old Abdullakh Anzorov as per news report.

Malaysian Parliament has approved the government proposed 2021 budget:

  • Malaysia’s Parliament approved the government’s proposed 2021 budget on Thursday.
  • Throwing a political lifeline to embattled Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin amid strong resistance to his 9-month-old leadership.
  • Opposition lawmakers as well as members of his governing coalition had warned during three weeks of debate that they would reject the budget, citing insufficient funding to fight a surge in coronavirus cases and help those hit by the pandemic as per news report.
  • Atlast, the budget was approved despite the dissenting voices.

Shipping industry associations called on Amazon.com Inc founder Jeff Bezos to support some seafarers stuck on merchant vessels:

  • Industry bodies including the International Chamber of Shipping wrote an open letter urging Bezos to exert pressure on the incoming Biden administration and other leaders to recognise seafarers as key workers, according to a joint statement on Nov 26.
  • The strength of Amazon’s supply chain is central to the success of red-letter retail days like Black Friday which was signed by the chairs of the industry groups as per news report.

A Turkish court handed down dozens of life sentences on Thursday for some of the nearly 500 defendants :

  • Turkish court in the capital Ankara handed down aggravated life imprisonment for a number of defendants in one of the biggest trials on the Gulenist Terror Group’s (FETO) coup attempt on July 15, 2016.
  • Four civilian defendants in the case were sentenced to 79 instances of aggravated life imprisonment as per news report.
  • While several military officers were handed down the same sentence for their role in the attempt in the Akinci trial, named after the air base in the capital where putschists coordinated the coup bid.
  • The trial was held in one of the largest courtrooms in the country specifically built for coup trials inside a maximum-security prison complex in the Sincan district of Ankara respectively.

Greece’s government announced a weeklong extension to the country’s current lockdown :

  • Government spokesman Stelios Petas said the lockdown, which was due to end on Nov. 30, would be extended to the morning of Dec. 7.
  • The announcement came amid a 24-hour strike by civil servants on a variety of demands, including better workplace protections against the coronavirus.
  • The strike disrupted public transport and services, while several hundred people defied a ban on gatherings imposed due to the pandemic, holding protests in Athens and the northern city of Thessaloniki.

Cyclone Nivar destroyed numerous trees in Southern India

  • On Thursday, after Cyclone Nivar crashed into shores of Southern India, many parts of them encountered heavy rains and numerous trees were destroyed as per initial news report.
  • Furthermore, in Chennai there was power cut for several hours.
  • The officials have stated that the full extent of the damage done is yet to be known however its effect was hugely diminished by the efforts and steps taken by Government as per news.

J&K : Terror attack on Army Patrol near Srinagar; two Jawans martyred

  • Two CRPF soldiers killed in an attack near Srinagar.
  • The militants ambushed the patrolling party and fired at them indiscriminately critically injuring two soldiers, who later succumbed.
  • The attack on the Indian Army road opening party (ROP) came on the 12th anniversary of the Mumbai 26/11 attack.
  • Operation is underway to nab the attackers.

  • Union Agricultural minister Narendra Singh Tomar invite farmers from Punjab to resolve differences on Dec 3.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approves proposition of Rs 36K crore for Ganga Expressway

  • On Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the state government’s proposition of Rs 38K crore for the Ganga Expressway Project, as per news.
  • In addition, the arrangement of 595Km long expressway was also accepted.
  • The expressway which is proposed is said to provide fast and easy traffic movement from Haridwar to Prayagraj which is mostly parallel to Ganga.

Xi orders Chinese military to strengthen training under real combat conditions

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday ordered the armed forces to strengthen training under real combat conditions and raise the capability of winning wars.
  • Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remarks while attending a CMC meeting held in Beijing.
  • In the meeting, Xi highlighted the importance of deepening the implementation of the Party’s thinking on strengthening the military in the new era and military strategy for new conditions.
  • He urged the military to improve their real combat capability through training and accelerate the building of new combat forces and the training system to further liberate and develop its combat capability.
