  • Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel passed away this morning due to multiple organ failure after having tested positive for novel coronavirus last month.

Merger of Lakshmi Vilas and DBS India approved by Cabinet

  • On Wednesday, The Union Cabinet has authorised the merger of Lakshmi Vilas Bank and DBS Bank. During press meeting, Prakash Javadekar who is a Union Minister said that this would ensure job security of more than 400 employees and in addition the depositors would also be protected.
  • The RBI (Reserve Bank of India) has made a draft scheme proposition which states the merger of DBS Bank of Singapore having branch in India with the Lakshmi Vilas Bank.

NDRF Chief says they are making arrangements for the worst as the Cyclone Nivar nears

  • The NDRF (National Disater Response Force) has stated that they are making arrangements for the worst case scenario as the Cyclone Nivar has been naring towards the coast of Tamil Nadu.
  • The Director General of NDRF SN Pradhan has said that the cyclone has been categorised as the most severe cyclone and thus keeping this in mind they have prepared for the worst.

Google Pay: Fee on money transfers for US, doesn’t apply to India

  • Google on Wednesday clarified that users in India will not have to pay any fee for money transfers on its payment platform and that the charges are for users in the US.
  • Last week, Google had announced that it is launching a redesigned Google Pay app next year on Android and iOS, starting with the US and that users will not be able to use the service on a web browser.
  • Reports had said that Google Pay will also add a fee on instant money transfers. ”These charges and fees are specific to the US and don’t apply to the Google Pay or Google Pay for Business apps in India,” a Google spokesperson said.
  • Google Pay competes with players like Paytm, Walmart-owned PhonePe and Amazon Pay in India.

MPEDA knocks state govts for reforms in marine fishing act to boost shrimp exports to US

  • The Marine Products Export Development Authority
  • MPEDA is pushing for necessary reforms in marine products act with state governments that will facilitate lifting of the ban by United States imposed two years earlier to make India more responsible toward turtle prevention, an official said.
  • Some 15 per cent of total shrimps exports from India had been impacted due to the ban by the US on import of sea caught shrimps from India.
  • In India, law and order and fishing regulations are state subjects and are governed by respective local governments.
  • The ban is only on sea shrimps (catch shrimps) as they are presumed to be caught by vessels without using turtle excluder devices (TED).
  • There is no issue with farmed shrimps exports.

DoT accepts proposal on ‘0’ prefix for all calls from landlines to mobile phones

  • The department has accepted sectoral regulator Trai”s recommendation for having the ”0” prefix for such calls, a move that will create sufficient numbering space for telecom services.
  • Callers will soon be required to add ”0” prefix for making calls from landlines to mobile phones in the country, with the telecom department asking telcos to make necessary arrangements by January 1 to implement the new system.
  • “All the fixed line subscribers should be provided with `0” dialling facility, that is, STD dialling facility,” said the circular posted on DoT”s website.
  • DoT said that time till January 1 is allowed to all the telecom service providers to implement this new system.

Against US dollar in early trade, Rupee rises 6 paise to 73.95

  • The rupee appreciated 6 paise to 73.95 against the US dollar in the opening session on Wednesday.
  • Traders said strong domestic equities, sustained foreign fund inflows and weak American currency also supported the rupee.
  • At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened at 73.98 against the US dollar, and gained ground to touch 73.95 against the greenback, registering a rise of 6 paise over its previous close.
  • On Tuesday, the rupee appreciated by 10 paise to close at a three-week high of 74.01 against the US dollar.

Nifty tops 13,100-mark, Sensex rallies over 300 points to scale fresh peak in opening session

  • Equity benchmark Sensex rallied over 300 points in opening trade on Wednesday, tracking gains in index-heavyweights HDFC twins, Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank amid largely positive cues from global markets and persistent foreign fund inflows.
  • After touching a lifetime high of 44,825.37 in the opening session, the 30-share BSE index was trading 242.76 points or 0.55 per cent higher at 44,765.78.
  • ONGC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, surging around 5 per cent, followed by SBI, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries and Axis Bank.
  • Domestic equities continued to look good at the moment on favourable global cues, said Binod Modi, Head-Strategy at Reliance Securities.

In Ladakh Army digs out old sleeping bags for troop acclimatization
