Polish President Andrzej Duda backtracks on abortion view amid protests

  • Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said on that women themselves should have the right to abortion in case of congenitally damaged fetuses.
  • The statement breaks the ranks with a conservative leadership that pushed a ban that has led to mass street protests.

SC asks Bombay HC to report Varavara Rao’s bail plea at the earliest in Bhima koregaon case

  • The Supreme Court, asked the CJ of the Bombay High Court to list before an appropriate bench at the earliest plea for the release of activist and poet Dr P Varavara Rao, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, on medical grounds.
  • The petition, filed via advocate Sunil Fernandes, sought bail on medical grounds and alleged violation of his rights calling for inhuman treatment was being given to Rao in jail, besides a lack of medical care.
  • The plea said in any event Dr Varavara Rao is in no position to stand trial in his current situation and needs critical medical care to keep him alive and hence no useful purpose is being served by his continued incarceration except to torture him beyond human endurance. All bail applications are by definition urgent and ought to be given priority in hearing by all judicial authorities especially in the time of COVID 19, the plea said.

Mehbooba Mufti said that Jammu and Kashmir had been converted into open jail

  • Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said Jammu and Kashmir has been converted into a jail where voices and expressions of politicians, journalists and civil society members are being stifled.
  • She said when citizens of Ladakh protested, they were taken to Delhi on a plane and asked what their issues were but now people of Ladakh are also regretting. She said they will continue to raise their voice against the new laws introduced in Jammu and Kashmir.

Delhi’s air quality will remain ‘very poor’ till October 31

  • The air quality in Delhi and the national capital region continued to be `very poor` category on Thursday as smog fills up the morning sky.
  • The Air Quality Index in Delhi was recorded at 338 which is in ‘very poor’ section. Even though the pollution levels are less than the registered levels from Wednesday it is still a great cause of concern.
  • According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ air quality monitor, SAFAR, the farm fire count on Tuesday was 1,830. The share of stubble burning in Delhi’s diminishing air quality was 18 per cent on Wednesday. It was 23 per cent on Tuesday, the maximum this season so far, 16 per cent on Monday, 19 per cent on Sunday and 9 per cent on Saturday.

Pak Minister accepts Pakistan’s role in Pulwama terrorist attack

  • A senior Pakistani minister on Thursday accepted that Pakistan was accountable for the deadly Pulwama terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 that brought the two countries to the brink of a war.
  • Our success in Pulwama, is a success of this nation under the leadership of Imran Khan. You and us are all factors of that success,” Science & Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry pointed in the National Assembly during a debate.

Sachin Pilot said that BJP’s idea of broadening Its Eastern Presence Will End After Bihar Poll

  • Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Thursday displayed confidence that the Grand Alliance will be victorious in Bihar and that BJP’s dream of extending its footprints in Eastern Indian states will be finished with the assembly elections in the state.
  • He also said that the Grand Alliance was making the agenda for Bihar’s development as its promise of providing 10 lakh government jobs was being parroted by the BJP which said it will create 19 lakh employment opportunities in the state. The Grand Alliance includes the RJD, the Congress and three Left parties.
  • Pilot also blamed the BJP for its poll guarantee of providing free Covid-19 vaccine to the citizens of the state, saying “putting this in the manifesto proves their mental bankruptcy.”

Government extends price cap on domestic flight tariff by three months

  • Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday announced the extension of domestic airfares cap, earlier announced till November 24, by three months.
  • Flights are categorised under seven sections depending upon flight durations, ranging from under 40 minutes to 180-210 minutes.
  • The base minimum airfare of flights ranges from ₹2,000 to ₹6,500 and maximum ranges from ₹6,000 to ₹18,600.

Government exempts income tax on deemed LTC fare for non-central Government.

  • The government on Thursday extended the income-tax exemption for the payment of cash equivalent of Leave Travel Concession (LTC) fare to the non-Central Government employees.
  • Accordingly, the payment of cash allowance, subject to a maximum of ₹36,000 per person as Deemed LTC fare per person (Round Trip) to non-Central Government employees, shall be allowed income-tax exemption.

Exports of onion seeds banned with immediate effect

  • The government on Thursday banned exports of onion seeds with immediate effect amidst rising prices of onion in the domestic markets.
  • Until now, the export of onion seeds was in the ‘restricted’ category, which means an exporter was required to obtain a licence or permission from the government for shipments. Onion seed exports were worth $5, 70,000 during April-August this fiscal.

L&T wins its biggest order of Rs. 25, 000 crore for bullet train project

  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won its single biggest order of ₹25,000 crore from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation to execute a portion of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.
  • The tender covers nearly 47% of the total 508-km-long corridor and the entire section falls in Gujarat. L&T has been mandated to complete the project in four years.

  • CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja smashed two sixes off the last two balls to help CSK chase down the target of 173 against KKR.
  • The defeat is KKR’s second in a row, while CSK, who are out of the playoffs race, registered their fifth victory. With KKR’s defeat, MI became the first team to qualify for IPL 2020 playoffs.
