Fodder Scam: hearing on Lalu Yadav’s bail plea in Dumka treasury case before till December 11

  • Jharkhand High Court defer to December 11 hearing on the bail plea of former Bihar CM Lalu Yadav in connection with the fodder scam case related to fraudulent withdrawal from Dumka treasury.
  • Yadav had last month secured bail in connection with the chaibasa treasury case related to the fodder scam. However, he is yet to secure bail in the Dumka treasury case.

Gujarat government answerable, says Supreme Court on Rajkot hospital tragedy that killed 6

  • The three-judge bench of Supreme Court took Suo motu cognisance of an incident where six persons died due to fire at a covid designated hospital in Gujarat.
  • The Court expressed anguished and set that this is not the first incident where people have died in a covid hospital. The bench also said that there are no guidelines to ensure that such incidents don’t take place.

In relief of Kananga Ranaut, Bombay High Court quashes BMC’s demolition order

  • Huge relief to Hindi film actress Kananga Ranaut, the Bombay high court crashes the notice and order issued by BMC to demolish her bungalow.

Allahabad High Court rejected the bail plea of Azam Khan, his son in forgery case

  • HC denied the bail to senior SP leader and MP Azam Khan and his son in two cases related to alleged cheating and forgery.
  • The court denied the bail saying that granting built them at this juncture will not be in public interest.

Chinese Universities where Hindi is taught have taken part in the first competition:

  • Students from more than a dozen top Chinese universities where Hindi is taught have taken part in the first competition of its kind in the country to dub dialogues from a Bollywood movie of their choice.
  • In an initiative by the prestigious Beijing International Studies University’s (BISU) School of Asian Studies, 80 videos in Hindi from 14 Chinese universities across the country have been submitted.
  • Titled “Hindi Oral Competition”, the online event was hosted by the Chinese Association for South Asian Language Studies.

European Union having new trade talks with Britain but with minimal progress: 

  • European Union said Friday that another week of talks with Britain on a new trade deal has gone with barely any progress. I
  • ts chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, is heading to London for ever-more pressing weekend negotiations to avoid chaos when Britain’s trade agreements with the European Union end at New Year.
  • Barnier emerged from a COVID-19 quarantine on Friday and said that after a week of remote video talks the same significant divergences persist hereinafter.

Thailand began testing  a vaccine against coronavirus:

  • Thailand Ministry of Public Health, Siam Bioscience, SCG and British-Swedish biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on the manufacturing and supply of the University of Oxford’s potential COVID-19 vaccine AZD1222 respectively.
  • AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford are committed to the highest ethical standards and sound scientific principles, and are working with expert regulatory agencies such as the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Thai Food and Drug Administration to ensure patient safety.

Britain plans to create a new watchdog to police big tech companies including Google and Facebook :

  • The U.K. government said Friday that it’s setting up a “Digital Markets Unit” next year to enforce a new code of conduct governing the behaviour of tech giants that dominate the online advertising market.
  • The Digital Markets Unit, scheduled to launch in April, will oversee a new regulatory regime for tech companies that’s aimed at spurring more competition.
  • The measures were foreshadowed in findings by former Obama economic adviser Jason Furman, who was commissioned by the U.K. Treasury to carry out a review of the digital economy.

An earthquake with a 4.7 magnitude shook Malatya province in eastern Turkey :

  • An earthquake was reported with 4.7 magnitude on Friday, sending people pouring out into the streets in fear.
  • However there was  no immediate report of any damage or casualties.
  • The quake, which was centered in the town of Puturge, struck at 11:27 a.m. (0827 GMT), Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate said. It was felt in several neighbouring provinces.

India disregards small lenders by writing off bank’s debt

  • It has been reported that small banks are very likely to face high funding cost and reduction in their bonds as the Central bank (Reserve Bank of India) has disregarded debt of an ailing lender.

Downstream oil regulator PNGRB simplifies gas pipeline tariff

  • These regulations have set the ground for gas consumption to go up for people in far flung areas of the country,” said Vivekanand Subbaraman, analyst at Ambit Capital.
  • The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) on Thursday released a unified tariff structure for over a dozen pipelines, including GAIL’s network of seven pipelines, with the aim of making natural gas more affordable to users far from the source of natural gas or import terminals.
  • According to experts, the move, which sets a fixed tariff for the first 300 km distance from the source of gas and a fixed tariff for distances over 300 km on the same integrated pipeline network, will lead to significantly higher usage of gas in areas far from LNG terminals and sources of natural gas clustered on the west coast of the country.

LVB shares suspended from bourses

  • Leaving 93,000 shareholders stuck with worthless paper, stock exchanges have suspended the shares of Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) following the RBI decision to merge the bank with DBS Bank on November 27.
  • The stock is likely to be delisted from the stock exchanges on Friday.
  • Shares of LVB had risen by 4.8 per cent to Rs 7.65 on Wednesday amid hopes that the RBI will announce some scheme to compensate shareholders.

  • In a move to diversify and distribute its shareholding to a larger set of the RBI regulated entities, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has completed the process of a private placement of 4.63% of its equity shares worth INR 81.64 Cr.
  • With the expansion, NPCI has got on-board some of the leading banks as well as new categories of few banks including non-bank entities authorised by the RBI. After this shareholding expansion, the total shareholder entities for NPCI has reached 67.

Sputnik V for India : Hetero to manufacture 100 million doses

  • Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and pharma firm Hetero have agreed to produce over 100 million doses per year in India of the Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund said in a statement.
  • The parties intend to start the production of Sputnik V in the beginning of 2021, it added.
  • Currently, Phase III clinical trials are approved and are ongoing in Belarus, the UAE, Venezuela and other countries, as well as Phase II-III in India, RDIF said.
  • Requests for more than 1.2 billion doses of Sputnik V vaccine came from over 50 countries. The vaccine supplies for the global market will be produced by RDIF”s international partners in India, Brazil, China, South Korea and other countries, RDIF said.
