LEGAL NEWS

  1. Karauli: Letter petition to Rajasthan HC Chief Justice seeks Central agency investigation into burning of priest alive.
    • A letter petition has been addressed to the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court, Indrajit Mahanty, seeking a central investigation agency ivestigation into an incident where a temple priest died after being set afire over a land dispute.
    • It is reported that the dispute arose after the priest’s efforts to stop temple land encroachment.
    • The priest, whose statement before the Rajasthan police has been recorded, said six people poured petrol on his bales of bajra (millet) which were lying at the disputed land and set it on fire on Wednesday. He claimed they also poured petrol on him and tried to set him on fire.
  1. CM Jagan Writes To CJI; Accuses Justice Ramana Of Colluding With TDP To Topple Andhra Government.
    • In a rare letter to Chief Justice of India, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has alleged that next-in-line for CJI – Justice NV Ramana is trying to influence the High Court’s due to his proximity with former CM Chandrababu Naidu.
    • In an 8-page letter sent to CJI SA Bobde on October 6, Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused Justice NV Ramana of being biased towards TDP and claimed that attempts are being made to topple his government. 
    • He has also accused him of influencing the sittings of the High Court in a way that matters important to Telegu Desam Party are allocated to few Honourable judges. 
  1. Nine women lawyers challenge Madhya Pradesh HC bail condition directing man accused of sexual assault to get Rakhi tied by victim
    • The petitioners have however stated that they have not challenged the grant of bail but only the condition set out of tying rakhi to the accused.
    • The plea filed by Advocate on Record, Pukhrambam Ramesh Kumar, has sought for a stay on the condition for bail imposed on July 30.
  1. Plea moved in Andhra Pradesh HC seeking 4% reservations for Transgender persons in Public Employment
    • A writ petition has been filed in the Andhra Pradesh High Court urging that the State Government be directed to implement 4% reservations for transgender persons in public employment with immediate effect.

  1. Supreme Court to work with full strength from October 12
    • The Supreme Court will work with its pre-pandemic strength from October 12 as its 12 Benches with about 30 judges would assemble through videoconferencing daily.
    • Five Benches of two to three judges in different combinations had been sitting on working days to hear around 20 cases daily since the outbreak of COVID-19 in March.

    • A Russian brokered humanitarian ceasefire in Nagorno- Karabakh was under severe strain on Sunday.
    • The ceasefire clinched after marathon talks in Moscow advocated by President Vladimir Putin, was meant to halt fighting to allow ethnic Armenian forces in Nagorno- Karabakh and Azeri forces to swap prisoners and war dead.

    • The growing use of nitrogen fertilizers in the production of food worldwide is increasing atmospheric concentrations of nitrous oxide — a greenhouse gas 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide that remains in the atmosphere for more than 100 years.
  1. Long-term memory controlled by protein synthesis in inhibitory cells
    • A research team has discovered that during memory consolidation, there are at least two distinct processes taking place in two different brain networks — the excitatory and inhibitory networks.
    • The excitatory neurons are involved in creating a memory trace, and the inhibitory neurons block out background noise and allow long-term learning to take place.
