  • Samuel Little, the United States’ most prolific serial killer according to the FBI, died in California aged 80 on Wednesday.
  • He confessed to 93 murders — mostly of women — carried out between 1970 and 2005.

Hindu community stages protest after mob demolishes century-old temple in Pak’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

  • A day after a Hindu temple was vandalised and set on fire by an angry mob in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a massive protest has now erupted outside the Supreme Court in Pakistan by the Hindu community.
  • A central leader of the radical Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, Rehmat Salam Khattak, is among the 26 arrested in raids following the attack on the temple in Terri village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district on Wednesday.

All calls from Jio to other networks in India to be free from tomorrow

  • India’s largest telecom operator Reliance Jio on Thursday announced that all voice calls made from Jio to other networks in India will be free from January 1.
  • Jio has been charging 6p per minute for calls to other networks to recover Interconnect Usage Charges, which is ending after today.
  • Jio already doesn’t charge for calls within its own network.

Onion prices jump 28% after govt lifts export ban

  • Onion prices have climbed by 28% at India’s largest wholesale onion market, Lasalgaon in Maharashtra, after the government on Monday lifted the ban on exports of the vegetable with effect from January 1.
  • On Wednesday, onion prices rose to an average of ₹2,500 per quintal. India had banned onion exports in September after a spike in prices.

Deadline for mandatory use of FASTag extended till February 15, 2021

  • The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has extended the deadline for mandatory usage of FASTag for all vehicles on the National Highway network till February 15, 2021.
  • The government had earlier planned to completely do away with cash payments at toll plazas from January 1.
  • The share of transactions by FASTag is reportedly 75-80%.

Scheduled international flights to remain suspended till January 31

  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has extended the suspension of scheduled international commercial passenger services to and from India till January 31.
  • The restriction does not apply to international all-cargo operations and flights specifically approved by the DGCA.
  • However, international flights may be allowed on select routes on a case-to-case basis.

Ambani loses title of Asia’s richest person to China’s Zhong Shanshan

  • China’s Zhong Shanshan, who founded the country’s largest bottled water company Nongfu Spring, has eclipsed Mukesh Ambani to become Asia’s richest person.
  • The 66-year-old’s net worth has surged by $70.9 billion this year to $77.8 billion, according to Bloomberg.
  • Nongfu shares have jumped 155% since their debut in September. Ambani is worth $76.9 billion, after gaining $18.3 billion in 2020.
