New Berlin airport opens 9 years late with little ceremony

  • Nine years late and far above its original budget, Berlin’s new airport is finally opening on Saturday with little ceremony and, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, few passengers.
  • Construction started in 2006 and it was initially slated to open in October 2011.

Narendra Modi installed seaplane service

  • PM Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the India’s first seaplane service in Gujarat and undertook a journey on its inaugural flight from Sardar Sarovar in Kevadia to the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad.
  • The 45-minute seaplane service — launched on the 145th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — connects the Statue of Unity at Kevadia with the Sabarmati riverfront 200 km away. The seaplane service was started by SpiceJet Aviation Company.
  • The seaplanes with their ability to land and take-off from water surface help connect geographies or regions that otherwise are a challenge owing to tough topography and help bring the remotest parts of India into the mainstream aviation network without the high cost incurred on building airports and runways.
  • The service will be provided incentives and benefits under the central government’s ‘Udaan’ scheme, which is getting implemented as per a tripartite agreement between the Gujarat government, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and the Airports Authority of India.

  • Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) National President Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday attacked both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Yadav said his party had been successful in exposing the true face of the BJP and the BSP before the people. He said this while paying tributes on the birth anniversary of Acharya Narendra Dev in Lucknow.
  • On the matter of supporting Independent candidate, Prakash Bajaj in the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha elections, the SP President said by supporting independents his party has revealed the truth to the public. Earlier, BSP supremo Mayawati had said her party will support the BJP in order to defeat the SP in the upcoming state Rajya Sabha elections.
  • The SP Chief said those who have connived with the BJP from within his party need to be exposed and that is why his party has supported the independent candidate. Our motive is to get votes and let the public decide which political outfits have joined hands and how many votes all parties amassed, Yadav added.

Kamal Nath moves Supreme Court seeking quashing of EC order against him

  • Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has moved the Supreme Court against the Election Commission (EC) order to cancel the senior Congress leader’s star campaigner status for violating the model code of conduct while campaigning for the by-polls in 28 Legislative Assembly constituencies slated in November
  • Nath contended that the EC passed the order without any notice to him or hearing in the matter, which completely violates the principles of natural justice. The plea submitted that this order is illegal, arbitrary, unreasoned, passed in complete violation of the basic canons of natural justice and in negation of fair play and therefore, deserves to be quashed.
  • The EC said that the decision has been taken for “repeated violation of model code of conduct and for completely disregarding the advisory issued to him”. This change comes into effect immediately, said the poll body.

Over 350 pilot whales dead in Australia’s largest mass stranding, several others to be euthanized

  • More pilot whales were found stranded in Australia on Wednesday, raising the estimated total to nearly 500, including 380 that have died, in the largest mass stranding ever recorded in the country.
  • Authorities had already been working to rescue survivors among an estimated 270 whales found Monday on a beach and two sand bars near the remote coastal town of Strahan on the southern island state of Tsamani.
  • Another 200 stranded whales were spotted from a helicopter on Wednesday less than 10 kilometres (6 miles) to the south, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service Manager Nic Deka said. All 200 had been confirmed dead by late afternoon.

  • Chinese billionaire Jack Ma’s Ant Group attracted a record $3 trillion, more than the UK’s GDP, of orders from retail investors for its dual listing in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
  •  Ant’s IPO is set to raise over $35 billion, topping Saudi Aramco’s $29.4 billion listing last December. The fintech giant will have a market value of about $315 billion.

Apple loses 100 billion dollar in value as iPhone sales fall due to late launch

  • Apple shares fell over 5% in after-hours trade on Thursday, wiping $100 billion from its market value after it reported that iPhone sales dropped 21% in September quarter.
  • iPhone sales fell on anticipation of the new models, which arrived a month later than usual this year.
  • The delayed launch meant no opening-weekend iPhone sales are included in September quarter results.

AIIMS Delhi to grant approvals for phase 3 trail of Covaxin.

  • USA is at the top with total covid-19 cases of 9,324,833, out of which 6,026,206 is recovered.
  • India is in second, total no. of cases reported are 8,157,902, out of which 7,461,633 patients recovered.
