Delhi High Court restrains AIIMS nurses from starting strike

  • The Delhi High Court on Tuesday ordered a ban on ongoing strikes seeking clarification on the AIIMS Nurses Union’s pay structure.
  •  This comes after the Union Ministry of Health directed the directors of AIIMS not to disrupt nursing activities due to the coronavirus epidemic. 

Delhi High Court asks DU: Why are students charged for digital degrees?

  • The Delhi University on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that a committee has been constituted to propose fees for issuing digital degree certificates on the recommendation of anyone.
  • Students who have not been given a printed degree are charged Rs 750 and students who have been given a digital degree are charged Rs 1,000.
  • The DU, represented by advocate Mohinder Rupal, told Justice Pratibha Singh that the reason behind charging students for digital degrees is that many people have to be hired for the degree process.
  • He also said that since the timeline is very short, the university is taking these measures, so there will be no need to charge more.

The SC has now asked the states to give Rs 2,000 per month for the education of children (from institutions including their families)

  • The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed all states to pay Rs 2,000 per month

US court closes 100 million lawsuits against PM Modi, Amit Shah

  • A US court has rejected a $100 million lawsuit against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah after they failed to appear in court after two hearings by the Kashmir Khalistan Association and two associates.
  • The lawsuit was filed on September 19, 2019, just days before Modi’s event in Houston, Texas.

  • Pramod Boro is the former president of the All Bodo Students’ Union and the president of the United People’s Party Liberal which tied up with the BJP and Gana Suraksha Party.
  • He led the movement for carving a Bodoland State out of Assam for more than a decade.

JD(U) insisting on having equal number of berths in Bihar

  • The BJP has seven members in Bihar, including its Deputy Chief Ministers Tarkishore Prasad and Renu Devi, while the JD(U) has five members and the Hindustani Awam Morcha and the Vikasheel Insaan Party one each.
  • BJP sources told The Hindu that since the party had got the maximum number of seats (74) among the NDA constituents, it should get more berths in the Cabinet than the JD(U), which had got only 43 seats.

  • Abhijit Mukherjee, former Lok Sabha member and son of former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee has demanded to see the manuscript of his father’s final volume of memoir.

  • Eligible Overseas Indians Voters should also be allowed to give vote in Indian elections; this proposal was made by the election commission to the government.
  • They have proposed to extent the Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballet System (ETPBS) facility for overseas voters.

Afghanistan: Kabul deputy governor killed in ‘sticky bomb’ attack on car

  • Mahboobullah Mohebi and his secretary both died on Tuesday when a device attached to their car exploded.
  • No group has yet said it was behind the attack.
  • It is the latest in a spate of killings in Afghanistan this month, including that of a government prosecutor who was shot dead while on his way to work.

Boris Johnson to visit India in bid to boots trade ties

  • International travel has been curtailed during his premiership by Covid-19.
  • The UK has said it is hoping to work towards a post-Brexit trade agreement with India after it formally leaves the EU’s trading regime at the end of the year.
  • The two countries have signed partnership agreements in recent years to boost ties in areas including life sciences, IT and the food and drink sectors.

Greenwich Council ordered to keep schools open

  • Greenwich Council had written to head teachers asking all schools to move classes online from Tuesday amid rising Covid-19 cases.
  • On Monday evening, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson ordered the south-east London council to keep schools open.
  • He said: “Using legal powers is a last resort but continuity of education is a national priority.”

  • Urban Company noticed that India’s leading unicorn and big internet firms had better work conditions than others.
  • Amazon Transportation Services (ATS), Ola, Big Basket, House joy, were placed at the bottom of Amazon’s logistics operation. The worst for their ‘partners’ were found to be Swiggy, Uber, and Zomato.
  • This year, 11 such platforms from sectors such as domestic and personal care services, logistics, food delivery, and transportation were evaluated.
  • The report focused on five areas of fair platform work, such as Fair Pay, Fair Conditions, Fair Conditions and Fair Platforms.

Facebook says that micromanaging every single post is not the best regulatory strategy to combat hate speech

The Stand-up India scheme of PM Modi nears 1 lakh loan penalties; up almost 8 percent in FY21 so far

  • Stand-up India has sanctioned 98,454 loan applications so far for PM Modi’s scheme to encourage entrepreneurship and self-employment. From 91,319 applications sanctioned as of March 10, 2020, this is 7.8 per cent up.
  • There are currently 305 lenders in the scheme and over 1.46 lakh bank branches linked to it. The extension of the scheme to 2025 was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

BPCL to consider purchasing a share in Bintang refinery in Oman Oil

  • The BPCL board would also consider combining itself with Bharat Gas Resources Ltd (BGRL).
  • BPCL has an interest of 63.68 percent in Bharat Oman Refineries Ltd (BORL).
  • A proposal for in-principle’ approval will be considered on 17 December by the company board.
  • This would amount to the acquisition of OQ S.A.O.C. of 88.8 crore equity shares.

  • New Zealand captain Kane Williamson dropped one place to be ranked third, while Team India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane jumped one place to enter into the top 10.

New study state injury to axon can stop neuron growth

  • A recent study led by researchers from the University of California – San Diego, has claimed that injury to axons can lead to severe neurodegenerative conditions like glaucoma and Alzheimer and also suggested ways to protect it for encouraging neuron growth.
  • Researchers know that this injury could result in neuronal impairment and cell death.
  • They have also discovered that inhibiting an enzyme called Dual Leucine zipper Kinase (DLK) appears to robustly protect neurons in a wide range of neurodegenerative disease models, and axonal regeneration.

SC has permitted qualified AYUSH doctors to prescribe immunity boosters for Covid patients

  • The Supreme Court on Tuesday held that qualified AYUSH doctors can prescribe government-approved tablets or mixtures as immunity boosters for Covid-19 patients as per the directions in the March 6 order of the Ministry.
  • The order of the apex court was passed on an appeal filed against the August 21 decision of the Kerala High Court holding that AYUSH doctors shall not prescribe tablets or mixtures as cures for Covid-19, but only as immunity boosters.
  • The Kerala High Court had ordered that alternative medicine such as homoeopathy, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and naturopathy be used to enhance immunity to resist the disease.

  • A growing number of US government agencies have been targeted in a sophisticated hack. 
  • The US Treasury and departments of homeland security, state, defence and commerce were attacked
  • The UK’s intelligence agency GCHQ is currently monitoring the situation and has described the compromises as “serious events”. 
  • Many suspect the Russian government is responsible for the attack, but it denied the claims as “baseless”.

New rules under EU Digital Service Act to be brought in for tech giants

  • The European Union is set to unveil new rules it says will “overhaul” the digital market, including how tech giants operate. 
  • They are expected to be the biggest revision in 20 years, focusing on competition and making platforms responsible for hosted content.
  • One key part of the legislation is expected to address the dominance of big players such as Google and Facebook – which tend to be US-based.
